How to be green (part one)

It is wonderful to see so many people getting into the spirit of green. It is high time that the...

There are more ways than you think possible to become eco friendly and conscientious of this earth. Let’s begin with recycling, and no I am not simply referring to sorting your bottles and cans into the blue container rather than stuffing them in a silver garbage can on the curb every Thursday morning.

You can recycle anything in your house, give it new life. Let’s say you want to rid yourself of the hideous dresser your mother in law gave you for a wedding gift. Although tempting, there is a better option, revive it! Sand the dresser down, after this you may want to apply a coat of primer or two, give it at least 4 hours drying time. When the dresser is dry, it is time to apply the paint, apply your shade of choice in two coats. Once the paint is completely dry it is necessary to change out the existing knobs for new modern knobs. After completing this project, you have most certainly earned your badge of honor in the clan of eco friendly.

Another less extravagant idea is to take a bike ride or a walk. Not only is gas heavy on your wallet, but it is heavy on the earth as well. Pollution has never been a greater issue than it is today, so leave your Nissan in the garage and take a nice stroll in the park, it makes no difference if it is via foot or bike. That is a matter of personal preference.

You may be surprised to know that you can do your part in saving the earth when you go shopping. That’s right, shopping can help save the earth. Well not exactly, but there is a loop hole. When you go shopping, make sure to bring a shopping tote. Something as simple as turning down plastic bags at shopping malls and grocery stores every time you shop can have a great impact on the planet. After years of exchanging your usual plastic bags for a personal shopping tote, just think how many bags you have saved from ending up in a land fill.

As you can see, being green is neither complicated nor expensive. All it takes is a little forethought and a desire to do something worthwhile to help save our planet. After all, it belongs to every single one of us. Let's treat it well.
